“M.BUTTERFLY” NATIONAL TOUR 2019 CONTINUES ON TO THE FIVE MAJOR CITIES UNTIL JUNE

The M. Butterfly National Tour 2019 just premiered (to standing ovations) in the City of Love, Iloilo City on Valentine’s Day until Feb. 17th and will continue on to major cities namely, Dumaguete (Feb. 28 to Mar. 3), Cebu (Mar. 14 to 17), Davao (Mar. 28 to 31), Manila (May 8 to 19) and Baguio (May 30 to Jun 2).
Presented by Tony and Grammy award-winning producer Jhett Tolentino and FRONTROW Entertainment, the event aims to bring this world-class masterpiece to those who did not have the opportunity to catch its 2018 Manila run. Location should never limit one’s exposure to the arts and culture. Its producers are taking steps to carry out their mission and advocacy in the performing arts and to further enhance audience development throughout the Philippines.

The revival production of David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly won various 2018 Aliw Awards including Best Play. The original premiered on Broadway nearly three decades ago. The producers are hoping that this classic drama resonates with audiences from across the country that “love, power and deception holds no boundaries–whether this be in a rural or urban setting.”

RS Francisco, last year’s Aliw Awards Best Actor for M. Butterfly shall reprise his portrayal of Song Liling. He first essayed this role in May 1990 for Dulaang UP, opposite veteran actor, writer and critic Behn Cervantes. Its debut rose to critical acclaim with packed houses and box office successes in over 100 performances across the country.

When M. Butterfly was revived recently on Broadway, Francisco had thought of bringing it to life once again to today’s theater audiences.
Young actor Aira Igarta will assume the role of Song Liling as alternate in certain performances. Trained by the likes of Tony Fabella and Luther Perez, Aira was originally a dance and voice scholar at Quezon City Performing Arts Foundation (QCPADFI).

French actor Olivier Borten shall take the role of René Gallimard while Philippine theater royalty Jenine Desiderio will portray Gallimard’s wife Helga. Veteran stage actor, U.K. Scotsman Norm McLeod, stepped onto the Philippine stage as Manuel Toulon, Gallimard’s superior at the Beijing embassy while trilingual American actor Lee O’Brian will personify Marc, Gallimard’s best friend.

Portraying the roles of Suzuki, Comrade Chin and Shu Fang is well-rounded artist Mayen Estañero. Her performance in the last year’s run landed her an Aliw Awards nomination for Best Featured Actress.
Aliw Awards Best Actress finalist Maya Encila receives her third nomination for her unique characterization of Renee and Pin-Up Girl in M. Butterfly while soprano Jasmin Salvo will be the new opera singer for the event.

The members of the ensemble playing the role of Kurogo are Pheith Iena Ballug, Ullyses Basa, Sasa Cabalquinto, Franco Ferrer and John Paul Ortenero.
